Ximena Saenz on The Education No Classroom Could Provide

There is a particular kind of knowledge that cannot be taught in a traditional sense. It cannot be transferred through a syllabus or absorbed through a lecture or demonstrated on an exam. It arrives the hard way, through sustained exposure to difficulty, through the slow accumulation of experiences that demand more than comfort allows, through years of showing up to something that does not immediately reward the showing up. The people who carry this knowledge tend to be recognizable not by what they say about themselves but by what they do when the conditions are not ideal. They keep going. Not because they are fearless, but because they have been in hard rooms before and they know that the room eventually changes.

Ximena Saenz has been in hard rooms since she was six years old.

She grew up in Mexico training competitively in gymnastics, a sport that begins reshaping a child’s relationship to effort before the child is old enough to understand what is happening. Alongside the gymnastics came competitive swimming and soccer, and alongside all of it came formal performing arts training at the Centro de Educación Artística in Mexico City. The disciplines were different in form but identical in demand. Every one of them required her to subordinate how she felt to what the work required. Every one of them installed, in the architecture of her character, a tolerance for the space between effort and result that most people spend their adult lives trying to develop.

She carried all of that to the United States when she immigrated as a teenager, and none of it was enough to make the transition easy. The athletic infrastructure she had trained within disappeared. The social world she had spent her childhood learning to navigate was replaced by one with entirely different rules. Depression settled in during those early years, the particular kind that arrives not from a single event but from the accumulated weight of dislocation, of being fluent in a version of yourself that your new surroundings cannot read. The education she had received in Mexico had prepared her to perform under pressure. It had not prepared her for this specific pressure, and there is no preparation for it anyway. You simply have to get through it.

She got through it.

The pandemic arrived later and did what it did for a great many people, collapsed the remaining external structures and forced a confrontation with what was actually there underneath. For Saenz, what was underneath was more substantial than she may have known. The values her mother had raised her with. The long-term orientation that years of athletic training had built into her. The understanding, cellular by now, that results do not arrive on the schedule you prefer and that this is not a reason to stop. She stepped back from what was not serving her. She returned to what was. And then she began building something new.

The content career she has constructed since then reaches nearly one million people on Instagram, with additional audiences across TikTok, Snapchat, YouTube, and X. The categories she works in, lifestyle, beauty, fashion, are among the most saturated in the creator economy, which means the competition is relentless and the barrier to entry is low and the only meaningful differentiator is the quality of what you bring to the work. What Saenz brings is not simply an aesthetic or a personality, though both are present. It is the residue of an education that started in a gymnasium in Mexico City and continued through immigration and depression and pandemic isolation and the long quiet in which she decided, without any guarantee of outcome, to begin.
