Many glass ceilings have been broken as our understanding of gender has evolved, but a familiar cultural assumption that women are inherently complicated, unpredictable, or difficult for men still stands unshattered. But what if the problem isn’t that men and women cannot understand each other, but that many couples have never learned how to communicate in ways that make the other person feel understood.
A new book by psychologist and author Dr. Doug Weiss – titled Women Make Sense (Really!) – proposes this idea and argues that many relationship misunderstandings stem from failures of listening, emotional awareness, and communication, rather than from women being inherently confusing. The deliberately provocative title of the book is an invitation to discuss communication, empathy, and individual understanding between men and women, and is an attempt by an experienced relationship counselor to bring a new perspective to the discussion,
Dr. Doug Weiss claims he did not decide to challenge the idea that women are difficult to understand out of epiphany, but from the understanding that the tools he had developed over four decades of professional life are too important to keep them to therapy sessions. “I have come to realize that men have absolutely no training on how to truly understand the woman they were married to or interpret her behaviors. Men are not genetically disadvantaged, but skill disadvantaged. No one teaches men how to understand a woman. Men and women think differently, but they can be understood. I have seen men take help and radically change their marriage,” he says.
In a way, Women Make Sense (Really!) builds on his earlier books, particularly Married and Alone and Emotional Fitness, but adds new understanding on how relationship misunderstandings can genuinely be reduced through practical communication habits without couples falling back on stereotypes about how all men or all women supposedly think.
“In my writing career, I have focused on practical tools that help deal with different relationship issues. This book goes a step further. It describes skills specific for men to actually understand a woman, her spherical way of thinking, how she views her environment and her expectations from him based on who she is, and not who he is. He is often left clueless on how she actually thinks and feels. With different tools he can actually start being her hero, not someone she needs to feel for tolerance but to look forward to sharing her heart and life with him,” Dr. Doug Weiss says.
Rather than approaching women as a mystery to solve, Dr. Weiss presents understanding as a relationship skill that can be developed through listening, emotional awareness, communication, and consistent attention. As founder and executive director of Heart to Heart Counseling Center in Colorado Springs, Dr. Weiss has developed counseling programs and educational materials addressing marriage difficulties, emotional disconnection, sexual addiction, betrayal trauma, and relationship recovery. With more than 40 books and a substantial library of therapeutic video resources behind him, Dr. Weiss has examined emotional isolation, communication, and the development of practical relationship skills from a different perspective.
Women Make Sense (Really!) brings those subjects into a more direct conversation about the misunderstandings that can develop between men and women in romantic relationships. The book addresses emotional regulation, emotional and relational safety, listening, recurring conflict, appreciation, affirmation, and practical ways to strengthen trust and intimacy. One recurring theme is the distinction between hearing what someone says and helping that person feel heard. Another concerns the tendency to respond to a partner’s distress by immediately trying to fix a problem, without first understanding what the partner wants or needs from the conversation. These observations are particularly relevant to couples who find themselves repeating the same arguments without resolving the underlying disagreement.
“I have heard this several times from men how it usually goes when a woman wants to be heard about an issue. He starts defending himself or making it about himself. She is not understood or heard. She escalates in hope to be understood. He gets frustrated thinking how to solve the problem. She is still not heard and escalates it further. He is still not understanding her and this goes on for hours. Dr. Weiss believes many of these arguments could be shortened if men learned to stop defending themselves or immediately trying to solve a problem. He encourages men to spend time listening, asking questions and acknowledging their partner’s experience rather than making the conversation about themselves.
Dr. Weiss’ broader relationship work provides context for the book. During an August 2026 radio appearance on The Bloomdaddy Experience, he had discussed the importance of emotional connection in marriage, encouraging couples to communicate their feelings, express appreciation, and create intentional opportunities to connect. Women Make Sense (Really!) has already been released and is available for purchase through its official website. Although the book is primarily written for men, Dr. Weiss also hopes women will read it to better understand the communication challenges their partners may face. Dr. Weiss believes women should recognize that many men have never been taught these communication skills. He encourages couples to work through the book’s understanding exercises together, including practicing a specific exercise 21 times, before expecting those skills to become consistent habits.
The book is accompanied by additional educational formats, including an eBook, audio material, and video courses, reflecting Dr Weiss’ established use of books and multimedia resources alongside counseling. To sum up, Women Make Sense (Really!) can be seen as a valuable resource in furthering the conversation about emotional intelligence, gender expectations, and communication in modern relationships.
