The Scottish fitness professional behind ‘Juice Fitness and Lifestyle’ talks about strength, reinvention, and the power of starting again.

It’s always surreal to learn about founders and professionals who choose unconventional paths to bring about a wave of positive change through their work. Many of these professionals also go on to transform lives and add more meaning to people’s lives. Doing this and much more is Arlene Barclay, a Scottish fitness professional and the heart and soul behind Juice Fitness and Lifestyle, who has been encouraging women to rethink strength, confidence, and what is possible in midlife. With Juice Fitness and Lifestyle, she serves as a no-nonsense fitness coach who empowers lives one day at a time, which led to her being named UK Legendary Fitness Instructor 2026.

For Arlene Barclay, strength has never been limited to what happens inside a gym. Her understanding of it has been shaped by motherhood, difficult experiences, professional challenges, and more than 25 years working in the fitness industry. Those experiences have influenced a philosophy that places resilience, independence, and self-belief at the centre of personal wellbeing.

Growing up in Scotland and experiencing challenging times throughout her life taught Barclay that resilience is often built through circumstances rather than chosen in advance. Becoming a mother and building a fitness career added new responsibilities and changed her perspective on many things in life for the better. Instead of allowing challenging chapters to determine what came next, she gradually developed a mindset centred on moving forward. Fitness played a crucial role in this process. Training offered her structure and discipline at times when other aspects of life felt uncertain. Over time, exercise became more than physical activity; it became a way to rebuild and reconnect with a sense of personal capability. These experiences continue to influence how she views change.

Becoming a mother, building a career in the fitness industry and navigating periods of significant adversity taught her resilience, independence and the importance of creating her own path. She learned that waiting for life to become easier isn’t a strategy; sometimes you have to become stronger instead. That philosophy has influenced the way she lives, trains and works today. She doesn’t believe age, circumstances or the past should decide what is possible for you. Her ambition now isn’t just about her own achievements. It’s about using everything she has learned to help other people, particularly women in midlife, realise that they are capable of far more than they may believe.

Her journey has also seen her become a No.1 bestselling author through her contribution to the Start Over Project – Volume 4, where her chapter, ‘Small But Mighty – Invisible to Invincible’, reflects the heart of her journey and the message she wants women to take away. All this has also required her to make choices based on values rather than convenience.

Confidence is another significant barrier for many women entering fitness spaces. Arlene Barclay feels that women shouldn’t feel they have to prove themselves before they are entitled to participate. Being inexperienced doesn’t mean someone doesn’t belong, she emphasizes. There’s also a cultural expectation that women should remain physically small or avoid appearing overly muscular. Barclay challenges that idea, particularly the assumption that physical strength somehow conflicts with femininity. She went on to develop the unique BOOMBAR™ training system, after vertigo threatened to end her fitness career, an important part of her story because she turned something that could have ended her career into something that became part of her work and purpose. Her experience competing in natural bodybuilding in her 40s further reinforces her message of strength and reinvention in midlife. She acknowledges that some opportunities can look attractive because they offer financial advantages, recognition or an easier path forward. For Barclay, who has been a single mother and has rebuilt her life and career through difficult chapters with resilience, integrity has remained a critical measure of success. That can sometimes mean taking a longer route or walking away from something that doesn’t feel aligned with personal principles.

To her, authentic leadership means having the courage to be completely yourself, even when that doesn’t fit someone else’s idea of who one should be. Speaking directly to women around the world, Arlene Barclay says she wants women to know that it’s never too late to start again, to change direction or to become the woman one was always capable of being. She also highlights that life may not always become easier, but people can become more resilient, experienced and self-aware as they move through it.

On a parting shot, Arlene Barclay says, “I didn’t become powerful because life was easy. I became powerful because I kept transforming. Confidence is often built by taking the first step when you’re still afraid. Look after your body. Build your strength. Protect your peace. Surround yourself with people who believe in your potential and never make yourself smaller to make somebody else comfortable.”
